Starting an art collection does not require a large budget or specialist knowledge. It requires time to look, a clear understanding of what you are buying and a work you want to live with. Watercolour and original printmaking can offer unique pieces or signed impressions at an accessible price.
Original artwork does not mean reproduction
An original watercolour is the physical sheet on which the artist worked with water and pigment. An original woodcut is made from a carved, inked and printed block; printing is its creative medium, not a photographic copy of another painting. Read more in the guide to what a woodcut is.
Choose through connection, not trends
Ask which detail makes you look again: a doorway, the rhythm of branches, a transparent wash or the contrast between ink and paper. Size and placement matter, but the first question can be simple: will you still want to look at this image a year from now?
Check four details before buying
- Technique: watercolour, woodcut or another process.
- Dimensions: the actual artwork, not the framed visualisation.
- Edition and signature: whether it is unique or an impression and how it is identified.
- Shipping: packaging, preparation and final cost before payment.

Buying directly from the artist
Buying directly makes it easier to retain accurate information about technique, dimensions and care. Every available work at Maria Betancor Studio displays its current price, uses secure checkout and is prepared in the Canary Islands with suitable protection for works on paper.
Caring for art on paper
Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, humidity and acidic materials. Conservation-grade framing with space between the artwork and glazing helps protect the surface while preserving the texture of paper, transparent washes and ink.
A collection can begin with one work
You do not need to assemble a group immediately. A first piece teaches you which scales, techniques and subjects stay with you. Later choices can grow around it without following a formula.
