Some landscapes are viewed from outside; others enter through a window. In Los Silos, in north-west Tenerife, architecture, mountain and everyday life form a territory of soft light, dark wood and domestic pauses. That relationship between interior and landscape inspired a watercolour by María Betancor.
A historic centre beneath Aregume mountain
The historic centre of Los Silos lies sheltered beneath Aregume mountain. Plaza de la Luz anchors much of its urban life and brings together landmarks such as Nuestra Señora de la Luz church, the former San Sebastián convent and Casa de los Trujillos, now the Town Hall. This heritage is not limited to monuments. Los Silos Town Council presents civil, domestic and religious architecture as part of collective memory. Façades, woodwork, courtyards and rooms also explain how the place has been inhabited.
The window between home and territory
An open window does more than frame a view. It controls light, lets air move and connects the privacy of a room with the landscape. Traditional Canary Islands architecture uses timber, substantial walls and carefully placed openings to create contrasts that shift through the day.
Representative buildings in Los Silos include sash windows, two-leaf windows, projecting eaves and local pine woodwork. They are practical solutions and ways of shaping the transition between shadow and brightness.
An everyday interior, not a monument
A Window onto Los Silos does not claim to document a specific listed building. It begins with an interior in the municipality and focuses on modest elements: a curtain, wooden chest, plant and the opening towards the outside.
The absence of people does not empty the scene. Traces of use imply presence: the chest stores, the plant is cared for and the curtains filter light. The room becomes a form of inhabitable memory.
Water, paper and light
The original watercolour on paper measures 22 × 27 cm. Transparent washes let the white support participate in the image, while warm greys, earth tones and greens create depth. Open contours preserve a sense of air.
This way of looking resonates with the municipality’s diversity, where historic centre, coast and protected landscapes coexist. The institutional Los Silos guide offers further context.
