A woodcut is an image printed from a carved relief block, traditionally made of wood. The artist removes the areas that should remain free of ink and leaves the printable forms raised. The surface is then inked, paper is placed on it and pressure transfers the image.
The result is not a photographic reproduction of a drawing. It retains the resistance of the block, the pressure, the density of the ink and the texture of the paper. Those decisions and subtle variations are part of the language of an original print.
From drawing to block
The image is conceived to be carved and printed. Because the impression reverses the block, every direction and every empty area must take that change into account. Tools open lines, lower surfaces and leave in relief what will receive the ink.
In Entre ramas, the pale trunks are not drawn in white ink: they are carved areas that allow the paper to remain visible against the black ground.
Inking and printing
A controlled layer of ink is rolled across the block. Paper is placed over it and pressure transfers the image. Ink quantity, pressure and paper absorption all influence the result.
Two impressions from the same block can therefore share a composition while showing subtle differences. These are not flaws; they are traces of the handmade process.
Is a woodcut an original artwork?
Yes, when the impression belongs to an artistic edition printed from the original block. It is not a later copy of another painting: printmaking is the medium for which the image was conceived. The signature, numbering when present and technique information help identify it.
This differs from a digital reproduction, where a previously completed image is reproduced by a printing system. In an original print, the block, ink and act of printing are integral to the work.
What to look at closely
- The edges and interruptions of carved lines.
- The density of ink across broad areas.
- The texture of the paper.
- Small variations that reveal hand printing.
- The signature and, where applicable, edition number.
How to care for a woodcut
As a work on paper, it should be kept away from prolonged direct sunlight, humidity and acidic materials. Conservation-grade mounts are recommended, with the artwork separated from the glazing.
